Sonny's intro to Three Little Words seems to be a play on the turnaround he uses for the end of the chorus', most of the minor blues Coltrane wrote sound inspired by Dizzy's Birks' Works and according to Ornette (from Ornette On Tenor), "The Tenor's got that thing, that honk, you can get to people with it. Sometimes you can be playing that tenor and I'm telling you, the people want to jump across the rail. Especially that D flat blues. You can really reach their souls with that D Flat blues...A funny thing is the last time I played tenor they took it from me and threw it off a hill. I was in this place in Baton Rouge playing with this blues singer and this guy came up to me and told me there were some people outside that wanted to meet me. I went out there and these cats were big. They said 'goddamit we don't like musicians' and started beating my ass. But I tried to protect my face with the case, and they pried my arms apart and one of them took my horn and threw it off the hill just like you throw a bottle on some rocks. It didn't have anything to do with me or my music."
gotta love Ornette. god bless Ornette Coleman. Give praise to Ornette Coleman.
